Ferrero retires with ankle injury at Auckland

AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) -Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain has retired from his second-round match at the Heineken Open because of an ankle injury.

The third-seeded Ferrero was trailing Swiss qualifier Michael Lammer 3-1 in the first set when he turned his right ankle while attempting a backhand shot. The injury may jeopardize his plans to play in the Australian Open.

He received courtside treatment from a trainer and played only one point before retiring.
