Peng won 3-6, 5-2 after Santangelo injured her ankle while attempting to hit a backhand in the third game of the second set. She called for a trainer and completed four more games before retiring.
"I started a bit nervous and tight and got broken one game which cost me the first set,'' Peng said. "In the second set, I was a bit more relaxed after I talked to my coach.''
Australian Open junior champion Ksenia Pervak of Russia also advanced, beating Tomoko Yonemura of Japan 6-1, 6-1. Also, Vera Dushevina beat Elena Bovina 6-4, 7-5 in an all-Russian match, and Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan defeated Jarmila Groth of Slovakia 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
