Czech Republic, Spain tied 1-1 in Fed Cup

BRNO, Czech Republic (AP) -The Czech Republic and Spain split the opening singles in Fed Cup play on Saturday.

The Czech Republic took a 1-0 lead after Petra Kvitova defeated Carla Suarez Navarro 6-4, 6-4. Nuria Llagostera Vives defeated Iveta Benesova 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 on indoor carpet at Brno Exhibition Center.

The reverse singles and the doubles will be played Sunday.


The winner of the best-of-five series will face Argentina or the United States in the April 25-26 semifinals.

Spain holds a 2-0 edge over the Czech Republic in their previous meetings. The Czechs are in the World Group for the first time since 2004, while five-time champion Spain lost to Russia in the Fed Cup final last September.
