Medina Garrigues, Ruano Pascual win in Stockholm

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) -Anabel Medina Garrigues reached the quarterfinals at the Nordic Light Open, winning on her 26th birthday and presented with a cake on center court Thursday after her straight-sets victory over a qualifier.

Medina Garrigues, seeded fifth, defeated Barbora Zahlavova Strycov of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-1. The Spaniard was a finalist in Slovenia last week and has won three of her four sets by 6-1 scores in this hard-court tournament.

"I'm very pleased with the way I played today,'' she said.


Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain, Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark and Camille Pin of France also reached the last eight.

Ruano Pascual downed Maria Elena Camerin of Italy 6-3, 6-2, and Benesova rallied past sixth-seeded Sania Mirza of India 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Wozniacki, seeded fourth, routed Finnish wild card Emma Laine 6-1, 6-0, and Pin ousted Swedish wild card Johanna Larsson 6-3, 6-2.
