Cash beats Courier, wins Champions Cup

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) -Pat Cash beat Jim Courier 6-3, 6-4 to win the Hall of Fame Champions Cup title on Sunday.

Cash, the 1987 Wimbledon winner, earned $54,000 and his first tournament victory on the Outback Champions Series, the tennis circuit for champion tennis players 30 and over. Courier was beaten on the day he turned 38.

"It's been a fantastic tour,'' Cash said. "I've been lucky to play a lot of tournaments. My favorite surface is here on grass. The Hall of Fame put on a fantastic event.''

In his first series tournament of the year, Cash claimed 800 points and is ranked No. 6. With 600 points, Courier took sole possession of No. 1 with 2,200 overall. He was tied with John McEnroe for first entering the tournament.

"He's clearly a deserving champion and a very worthy champion,'' Courier said of Cash. "He's a Wimbledon champion after all.''

Magnus Larsson defeated Mal Washington 6-4, 6-4 in the third-place match.
