Arguello beats Brizzi in Dutch Open first round

AMERSFOORT, Netherlands (AP) -Seventh-seeded Martin Vassallo Arguello of Argentina won only his fourth match of the year when he beat Italian qualifier Alberto Brizzi 6-4, 6-3 in the Dutch Open first round on Monday.

Vassallo Arguello will have a chance to win consecutive matches on the ATP tour for the first time in a year when he meets Teimuraz Gabashvili in the second round after the Russian topped Thierry Ascione of France 6-2, 7-6 (1) for his first win since April.

Alberto Martin of Spain, a two-time quarterfinalist on Amersfoort's clay, was another to notch his first win in three months when he defeated Yuri Schukin of Kazakhstan 7-6 (8), 6-4.


Also, Dutch wild card Thiemo De Bakker defeated Romania's Adrian Cruciat 7-5, 6-4, and Belgium's Christophe Rochus topped Spanish qualifier David Marrero 7-5, 6-2. Martin will next play defending champion and Steve Darcis of Belgium, who received a bye into the second round as one of the top four seeds.

Frenchman Marc Gicquel was the top seed.
