Roddick wins in 3 sets in Davis Cup opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Andy Roddick beat Marco Chiudinelli in straight sets to move the United States into a 1-1 tie in its opening-round Davis Cup tie with Switzerland.

James Blake lost to Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka in four sets to put the United States in an early hole in the indoor hard-court match.

Roddick answered with a 6-1, 6-3, 7-6 (5) victory.

It was his 30th U.S. Davis Cup victory, equaling Andre Agassi behind John McEnroe. It was only Chiudinelli’s third Davis Cup match and first in another country.

No. 16-ranked Wawrinka lost the first set 3-6 before winning 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (3) in the indoor hard-court match Friday.
