Radwanska reaches quarterfinals in Linz

LINZ, Austria (AP) -Third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska reached the quarterfinals of the Generali Ladies after beating Kaia Kanepi of Estonia 6-2, 6-4 Wednesday.

The 10th-ranked Pole has won three WTA Tour titles this season and is competing to qualify for the season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships.

Radwanska broke Kanepi in the opening game of both sets and stayed in control throughout.

Radwanska, who had a bye in the first round, will next play either fifth-seeded former champion Nadia Petrova or Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia.

Flavia Pennetta continued her recent run of good results by beating Agnes Szavay of Hungary 6-1, 6-2 in a first-round match.

The seventh-seeded Italian, who reached the final of the Zurich Open last week, dropped only three points on serve in the opening set and broke Szavay on six occasions.

Murray advances at St. Petersburg Open

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) -Defending champion Andy Murray beat Viktor Troicki 6-3, 6-3 Wednesday to advance to the second round of the St. Petersburg Open, while Nikolay Davydenko pulled out with a wrist injury.

The 6th-ranked Russian sustained the injury on Tuesday and said he was unlikely to be able to play in Paris next week.

"Even if the inflammation and pain pass, I will have no time for preparation,'' Davydenko said.

Davydenko said that if there was no pain by the end of the next week he would have two weeks to prepare for the season-ending Masters event in Shanghai.

Murray, fresh from winning the Madrid Masters on Sunday for his fourth title this season, broke Troicki in the fifth and eighth games of the first set. The fourth-ranked Briton had an early break in the second set and saved the only break point he faced in the eighth game.

"He (Troicki) made a lot of mistakes on his forehand today,'' Murray said. "I haven't seen him play so much, so I didn't really have too may tactics, but for my game I tried to serve well and change the speed of the ball a lot.''

It was the eighth consecutive win for the U.S. Open finalist, including two victories in Britain's Davis Cup World Group playoffs against Austria in September.

Murray, who also won titles in Doha, Marseille and Cincinnati, next plays Ernests Gulbis of Latvia.

Earlier, Fernando Verdasco beat wild card Karlis Lejnieks 6-1, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals.

The third-seeded Verdasco had little trouble against the 20-year-old Latvian, the lowest-ranked player in the field at No. 664 and playing in his first ATP event. The 15th-ranked Spaniard, a runner-up to Murray here last year, had two breaks in each set to closeout the match in 65 minutes.

In the quarters, Verdasco will face German veteran Rainer Schuettler, who defeated Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia 6-3, 6-3.

In other first-round action, Kazakhstan qualifier Andrey Golubev served 19 aces to beat Olivier Rochus of Belgium, 6-1, 6-4.

LINZ, Austria (AP) -Fifth-seeded Nadia Petrova and sixth-seeded Marion Bartoli advanced to the second round of the Generali Ladies on Tuesday.

Petrova, who won the tournament in 2005, rallied to beat Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. The 13th-ranked Russian conceded just two points on serve in the final set.

Bartoli improved to 3-5 against Ai Sugiyama by beating the Japanese player 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (8). The 17th-ranked Frenchwoman failed to convert five breakpoint chances in the second set, and came back from a break down three times in the third before she finally converted her seventh match point.

Also, Maria Kirilenko beat Olga Savchuk of Ukraine 6-2, 7-5 to reach the second round. The 30th-ranked Russian, who won her third WTA Tour title of the season last month, was broken in the second set before winning four straight games to close out the match.

Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine also advanced, beating Ekaterina Makarova of Russia 6-3, 6-3, Nuria Llagostera Vives of Spain rallied to beat Samantha Stosur of Australia 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, and Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia defeated Yvonne Meusburger of Austria 6-4, 6-2.

Ana Ivanovic is the No. 1 seeded player in Linz. The top four have a first-round bye .

Roddick advances at Lyon Grand Prix

LYON, France (AP) -Andy Roddick hit 18 aces and did not face a break point Tuesday, beating Nicolas Mahut 7-6 (5), 6-4 Tuesday in the first round of the Lyon Grand Prix.

The top-seeded Roddick, who won the Lyon title in 2005, earned the only break of the match in the second set. Mahut, who also had 18 aces, saved three break points in the first set.

Roddick hurt his knee Monday while playing doubles, but said the injury has healed.

"I did not feel anything this morning, so now everything is fine,'' said Roddick, who next plays either Robby Ginepri or defending champion Sebastien Grosjean.

Roddick is already looking forward to next month's Masters Cup, although he still needs to qualify for the event in Shanghai.

"It's maybe a more open tournament this year,'' the American said. "There's not only Roger (Federer), but others like (Andy) Murray who are playing very well, or (Juan Martin) del Potro. It promises to be a great tournament.''

Also, second-seeded Richard Gasquet of France rallied to beat Santiago Giraldo 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (3) and advance to the second round.

Gasquet, who has dropped to 15th in the ATP rankings, pressured Giraldo's serve throughout, but could only take two of his seven break-point chances.

Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador also won, beating sixth-seeded Ivo Karlovic of Croatia 7-6 (4), 6-3, while Fabrice Santoro defeated Fabio Fognini of Italy 6-4, 6-1 and Andreas Seppi of Italy beat David Guez of France 6-2, 7-5.

Federer needs three sets to beat Reynolds

BASEL, Switzerland (AP) -Roger Federer was stretched to three sets before beating 86th-ranked Bobby Reynolds 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 Tuesday in the first round of the Swiss Indoors.

The top-seeded Swiss had a match-point in the second set tiebreaker despite trailing 5-1 early, but he needed three more in the deciding set before advancing to the second round.

"It was more like a serving contest,'' said Federer, who did not face a break point. "He served in all corners pretty well.

"I was never really under pressure the entire match on my serve and that was the key. I could stay calm even if I lost the second set.''

Davis Cup teammates David Nalbandian and Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina also advanced, both with comfortable straight-set wins.

The second-seeded Nalbandian beat Albert Montanes of Spain 6-4, 6-2, and the third-seeded Del Potro defeated George Bastl of Switzerland 6-2, 6-4.

Earlier, 42nd-ranked Simone Bolelli of Italy beat seventh-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 6-4, 7-5, lucky loser Andreas Beck of Germany defeated Nicolas Devilder of France 6-4, 6-4, and Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany beat compatriot Denis Gremelmayr 6-4, 7-6 (5).

BASEL, Switzerland (AP) -Second-seeded David Nalbandian of Argentina cruised to a 6-4, 6-2 win over Spain's Albert Montanes in a first round match Tuesday at the Swiss Indoors.

The 2002 champion conceded no break point chances to his 47th-ranked opponent and won in 59 minutes.

Nalbandian, ranked eighth, broke to lead 5-4 and took his first set point with a forehand winner. In the second set, he broke Montanes in the first and seventh games and finished the match with an ace.

Earlier, 42nd-ranked Simone Bolelli of Italy beat seventh-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 6-4, 7-5.

It was another good day for Germany, after qualifier Benjamin Becker's defeat of fifth-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka late Monday.

Andreas Beck, a lucky loser in qualifying, beat Nicolas Devilder of France 6-4, 6-4 and Philipp Kohlschreiber beat his compatriot Denis Gremelmayr 6-4, 7-6 (5).

Top-seeded Roger Federer was due on court in his hometown tournament later Tuesday in a first round match against 86th-ranked American Bobby Reynolds.

Cilic, Ancic beaten in upsets in St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) -Marin Cilic and Mario Ancic were beaten in upsets Tuesday in the first round of the St. Petersburg Open.

Jeremy Chardy of France beat the seventh-seeded Ancic 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, while Kazakh qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin saved two match points before ousting the fifth-seeded Cilic 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (6).

After trading breaks early in the third set, the 23rd-ranked Cilic had two match points at 6-4 in the tiebreaker. But the 158th-ranked Kukushkin won four consecutive points to score his first career victory over a seeded player in an ATP event.

Cilic had 19 aces in the match to Kukushkin's 10.

The 74th-ranked Chardy capitalized on Ancic's double fault in the fifth game to take the first set. Ancic, ranked 36th, leveled the match with a break in the eighth game of the second set and had an early break in the decider to go 3-1 up.

Chardy broke back to 3-3 and saved two break points in the ninth game before closing with the second match point on Ancic's serve.

Two-time former champion Mikhail Youzhny of Russia, seeded fourth, advanced by defeating Ivan Navarro of Spain 6-2, 6-1.

Youzhny, who won the tournament in 2002 and 2004, won five consecutive games and had two breaks in the second set.

Also, Russian wild card Michail Elgin beat Filippo Volandri of Italy 6-4, 6-4.
